Scholarships, Awards And Incentives

The Government of Tamil Nadu have instituted scholarships, awards and incentives for outstanding sportspersons at various levels and in various categories.Financial assistance is being provided to Tamil Nadu sportspersons to participate in various national and international level competitions. The State Government awards high cash incentives to the winners at national and international level competitions. The Government has substantially increased the prize money for winners at the international and Olympic games. An Olympic gold medalist from Tamil Nadu will receive a reward of Rs. 2 crores from the State Government.


Besides Hon’ble Chief Minister awarded a sum of Rs 2.00 crores to grandmaster Vishwanathan Anand on being crowned World Chess Champion for the fifth time.

Tamil Nadu Government has instituted a special scholarship for 5 elite sportspersons with Rs. 25 lakhs per annum each to develop their performance in every possible way to win medals at international competitions and the Olympics.

Government of Tamil Nadu also encourages conduct of international competitions by making available world class sports facilities as well as special financial grants.

SDAT Sports Scholarship Scheme

Under this scheme, outstanding national level medal winners are awarded with a scholarship of Rs.10,000/- for school students and Rs.13,000/- for college students. 231 school students, besides 155 college students benefited under this scheme during the year 2011-12.

Scholarship For Elite Sportspersons (Gunning For Olympics)

A special scheme to prepare and assist the sportspersons with potential to win medals at Olympics and International competitions has been launched. Under this scheme, five most talented men / women sportspersons are selected and provided with financial assistance of Rs. 25 lakhs per annum each to provide scientific training, nutritious food, high standard sports and training equipments, participation in competitions etc. The scheme is being implemented at an annual recurring expenditure of Rs.1.25 crores.

Special Cash Awards For Budding Talents

Every year we identify budding talents through the World Beaters Talent Spotting Scheme by conducting regional level competitions. In 2012-13 a sum of Rs. 97.20 lakhs was released to 3240 budding talents selected through the scheme.

Pension Scheme for Sportspersons Who are in Indigent Circumstances

 Outstanding sportspersons of yesteryears in indigent circumstances whose monthly income does not exceed Rs.6,000/- and who have crossed the age of 58 are provided with a pension of Rs.3000/- per month during their life-time. In case of death, spouse is eligible for family pension for life time. There are 65 pensioners and 5 family pensioners as on date covered under the scheme.

Sportspersons Welfare Fund

A Sportspersons Welfare Fund has been created for providing financial help to those who get injured during their participation in National and State level competitions. In 2012-13, a sum of Rs 70,000/- has been released to 3 injured sportspersons.

Reservation in Recruitment for Outstanding Sportspersons and Allocation Of Seats In Professional Colleges

5% reservation of jobs for outstanding sportspersons has been provided in the Police department. Besides the Government have increased the reservation from 100 to 500 seats in the engineering colleges under sports quota.  Three seats have been allotted in Medical Colleges under sports quota for eminent sportspersons.

Chief Minister’s State Sports Award

To recognise the achievements of sportspersons, coaches and physical education teachers, Chief Minister’s State Sports Award consisting of a citation, a replica and an award of Rs.1 lakh is being awarded to outstanding individuals in these categories.

Champions Development Scheme

Champions Development Scheme is a unique scheme, under which sportspersons, who are exceptionally talented and who have the potential to win International medals are identified and ‘need based’ assistance provided. Financial assistance upto a maximum of Rs. 2 lakhs is provided every year to a sportsperson selected under this scheme. Till now 217 sportspersons have been inducted under this scheme.
All these incentives will go a long way in improving chances of players from Tamil Nadu qualify for participating in Olympics at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2016, and the Asian Games and Common Wealth Games to be held in 2014.
