1. Conduct of Village Games

The Government is sanctioning a sum of Rs. 25.05 crore to conduct village games in all 12,524 village panchayats. Village games, the first of its kind, are conducted in Athletics, Volleyball, Kabaddi and Football for men and women. Medals / prizes and certificates are distributed to the winners in order to encourage sports among the rural masses.

2. Monthly Competitions

Sports culture can be developed only if competitions are conducted on a regular basis. Monthly competitions in Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Boxing, Fencing, Football, Gymnastics, Handball, Hockey, Kabaddi, Kho-Kho, Swimming, Taekwondo and Volleyball are conducted for boys and girls of different age groups in 32 districts. These competitions bring great opportunities for sportspersons to exhibit their talents and to enhance their performance.

3. Anna Cycle Race

To commemorate the birth centenary of Perarignar Anna, a cycle race is conducted in all the districts on 15th September every year for boys and girls of different age groups. The Government is sanctioning a sum of Rs.1.00 lakh every year for this Scheme.

4. State and National Level Competitions Conducted by State Sports Associations

 Financial assistance is extended to the State Sports Associations for hosting State and National level competitions and to field Tamil Nadu contingent for participation in National level competitions. 


5. Hosting of International Championships in Tamil Nadu

In order to encourage hosting of International championship in Tamil Nadu, >suitable financial assistance are provided to the State Sports Associations / National Sports Federations.

ATP Chennai Open Tennis Tournament

The prestigious ATP Chennai Open Tennis Tournament is conducted at the SDAT Tennis Stadium, Chennai in January every year for the past 21 years. The Government of Tamil Nadu is contributing a sum of Rs.2.00 crore as lead platinum sponsor for hosting this event at Chennai. The World’s top ranked players are participating in this tournament. The 21st edition of the event was held from 2nd to 8th January 2017.

6. State Games for Chief Minister’s Trophy

The State Games for Chief Minister’s Trophy is conducted at three levels viz., district, regional and state levels. Competitions were conducted for men and women below 21 years of age in 10 disciplines in the year 2016-17 viz. Athletics, Beach Volleyball, Boxing, Fencing, Gymnastics, Handball, Judo, Swimming, Taekwondo and Weight lifting. The trophy carries a prize money of Rs 1,00,000/-, Rs.75,000/- and Rs 50,000/- for the first, second and third place winners for each player of the team respectively. A sum of Rs.819.00 lakh is sanctioned for conducting the competitions and awarding the prize money.

7. All India Civil Services Tournament

In order to encourage sports and there by fitness amongst the government employees, Tamil Nadu fields teams in various disciplines at the All India Civil Services Tournaments held in different states by rotation. The SDAT also hosts some games for this tournament.

8. State Level Civil Servants Sports Meet

The State Level Civil Servants Sports Meet are conducted for State Government employees with a view to promote physical fitness and healthy lifestyle. District and State Level competitions have been conducted for men and women employees in the games viz. Volleyball, Badminton and Table Tennis. The Government is sanctioning a sum of Rs.40.37 lakh for this meet.

9. District and State Level Carrom Competition

Carrom competitions are conducted for school children of Government Schools, Government Aided Schools, Panchayat / Town Panchayat / Municipal Schools in categories viz. Sub Juniors (upto 5th std) and Juniors (6th to 12th std).

9. Athletic Competitions for Differently abled Persons

Sports competitions in Athletics are conducted for various categories of differently-abled persons Viz. Physically Challenged, Visually Impaired, Mentally Challenged and Hearing Impaired at district and state level with a view to motivate and encourage them.

The category-wise competitions are as follows:

A prize money of Rs.5,000/-, Rs.3,000/- and Rs.2,000/- is awarded to the first, second and third place winners respectively. The Government is sanctioning a sum of Rs.15.01 lakh for the conduct of the above competitions.

Team Games for Differently abled Persons

Team spirit and confidence development are key areas for developing motivation among the differently-abled persons. With this background, state level competitions are conducted in the following categories:

Physically challenged (Orthopedically handicapped) both men and women

a)Shuttle Badminton; and b) Table Tennis

Visually impaired (Total blind and partially sighted) Both men and women

Adopted Volleyball

Intellectually challenged (mentally retarded) Both men and women

Throw ball

Hearing impaired (Deaf) Both men and women


The Government is sanctioning a sum of Rs.30.00 lakh every year for the conduct of the above competitions.

Acrobatics and Water Sports

The Government of Tamil Nadu promotes the games of the communities who are traditionally engaged in acrobatics and water sports. It was observed that these communities viz. Kazhaikoothadigal and Meenavargal have been traditionally engaged in sports activities and if their children are provided with proper coaching, food supplement, exposure etc., there is a possibility that they can be groomed into medal winners. This will go a long way in developing the acrobatics and water sports activities in Tamil Nadu.

A water sports centre is functioning at Nagapattinam District Sports Complex and an acrobatics centre at Karattupalayam in Erode District.

Beach Games

Games that are played on a sandy beach are known as Beach Games. This is a game that is played for summer transformation, entertainment, etc. This requires special skill for playing as it is not played on a natural surface.

The Government has approved holding of beach games such as Beach Football, Beach Kabaddi and Beach Volleyball in the coastal areas of Ramanathapuram, Nagapattinam, Cuddalore, Kanniyakumari, Thoothukudi, Chennai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Pudukottai and Kancheepuram districts. In order to motivate and encourage competition among sportspersons in coastal areas, state level beach games are conducted inviting teams from these districts. A sum of Rs.5.00 lakh has been allotted for the conduct of State level competitions.

State Level Inter University Competition

State level Inter University Sports Competitions are conducted to encourage sportsmanship and healthy competitions among the college students. It also provides competition-exposure to the students prior to their participation in Inter-University / National / International tournaments.

 A sum of Rs.1.00 crore was sanctioned for the conduct of State Level Inter-University competition during the year 2016-2017. The State Level Inter-University competitions are held in Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Football, Hockey, Kabaddi, Table Tennis, Tennis, Volleyball, Swimming, Weight Lifting and Handball. A prize money of Rs.10,000/-, Rs.7,500/-, and Rs.5,000/- is awarded to the first, second and third place winners respectively. During the year 2016-2017, 47 universities have participated in the State level Inter–University competitions held at various universities.

Hosting of national level competitions for the year 2016 -2017 Under Khelo India Programme

The Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India is extending financial assistance to the States for hosting national level competitions in various disciplines for boys and girls below the age of 14 and 17 years under the scheme called “Khelo India–National Programme for Development of Sports”.

During the year 2016-2017, Tamil Nadu hosted the national level competitions in Football, Taekwondo and Volleyball at Chennai. The Government of India has sanctioned Rs.99.00 lakh for the conduct of these Competitions. Tamil Nadu Team participated in all the seven groups of national level competitions conducted in different states.
